King of kings, Lord of lords,
Prince of peace with crown of thorns.
God of heaven, just and good,
hated, mocked, unjustly scorned.
Lifted high above the earth
The sinless Lamb put on the curse.
Put on my sin, put on my shame,
Put on my punishment of the grave.
Blameless, spotless, perfect, clean,
Why would He do such a thing for me?
Lay down His life, take my place.
Be spit on and beaten, and called a disgrace.
It was His great grace, His unending love,
God’s righteousness, and judgement
Displayed on His Son.
God’s holiness declared a price must be paid
for all of my sin, for all my shame.
Yet all the while He displayed His grace,
His abundant love shown on His face.
Jesus looked at me while on the cross,
He smiled and said, “You had to be bought.”
Nothing I could do to earn such a gift,
The gift of salvation, the gift of newness.
Because of His blood I am made white,
Because of His sacrifice I am made right.
He is my righteousness, He is my joy,
I’ll be with my Savior forevermore.
I praise my Jesus because who He is,
I’ll lay down my life because He gladly gave His.
